How many grafts do I need? The short answer
Most cases need about 1,000 to 5,500 grafts, depending on how wide the bald area is. But the graft count alone is not enough, because density comes from the number of hairs. That is why your right number is set after studying the donor area, counting the hairs in your grafts and designing the hairline that suits your face.
Grafts needed by Norwood stage
| Hair loss stage (Norwood scale) | Estimated grafts | Pattern of hair loss |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 2 | 500 to 1,200 | Slight recession at the temples |
| Stage 3 | 1,000 to 2,500 | Deep recession at the temples |
| Stage 3 vertex | 1,500 to 2,500 | Temple recession with thinning at the crown |
| Stage 4 | 2,000 to 3,200 | Thinning at the front with a wider crown |
| Stage 5 | 2,800 to 4,500 | Front and crown nearly meeting |
| Stage 6 | 4,000 to 5,500 | Continuous baldness across the top of the head |
| Stage 7 | 5,000 to 7,000; the donor area may limit coverage | Only a band of hair remains at the sides and back |
These figures are approximate and vary between sources. Do not base your decision on them before a specialist has examined your case.
Grafts or hairs? The difference that changes your plan
The real question is not how many grafts you need, but how many hairs. The difference between the two is very large, because one graft can hold one hair or several.
An example makes this clear:
- 2,000 hairs can come from only 1,000 grafts, if each graft holds two hairs.
- 5,000 hairs can come from about 1,700 grafts if each graft holds 3 hairs, but would need 5,000 grafts if each graft held a single hair.
The sums are theoretical, but they show why two clinics can take very different numbers of grafts for the same result. In a study of ten men published in 2018, the average graft held about 2.3 hairs, which shows how much this figure can vary from person to person.
So when you compare offers, ask about the expected number of hairs, not only the number of grafts.
How many hairs are 3,000 grafts?
At an average of two hairs per graft, 3,000 grafts give about 6,000 hairs. At an average of 3 hairs, they give about 9,000 hairs. Your true average is known only after your donor area has been studied.
How does OZEL find the right number of grafts for you?
At OZEL we have developed a way of studying your donor area before we give you any number. Our goal is to extract the number that suits your case: the highest possible density, without wasting your hair reserve.
1. We study donor area quality and your graft type
We study the type and quality of the donor area, the number of grafts available and the number of hairs in each graft. The donor area is a limited reserve, and what is extracted from it does not grow back.
2. We choose the punch size for your skin thickness
The punch is the tool used to extract each graft. Because skin thickness differs from person to person, we do not use one size for everyone. We choose the size that suits your skin and your grafts, so that grafts are extracted precisely and preserved.
3. We extract grafts with 3 or more hairs
We prefer grafts that hold 3 or more hairs, to reach the most hair from the fewest grafts. The result is better density, with a reserve left for you if you need it in the future.

We do not fix the front and ruin the back
A hair transplant is a cosmetic operation, and it makes no sense for the front of your head to improve while thinning appears at the back. The operation has to be fully calculated from the start: how many hairs the recipient area needs, how many the donor area can give, and how it will stay even afterwards.
This is why asking for the biggest possible number is a common mistake. A bigger number does not mean a better result. Hair loss can continue with age, so a good plan keeps a reserve for what you may need later.
Hairline design: where will your grafts go?
The number of grafts depends on the hairline, because its position sets the area to be transplanted. At OZEL we believe a successful hair transplant starts with a hairline drawn to match the features of the face. However high the number, the result will not look natural if the line does not suit your face.
Before drawing, we study in detail:
- The shape and anatomy of the face
- The size of the forehead, which sets the height and style of the line
- The shape of the eyebrows and how it affects the style of the line
- The nose, eyes and mouth and the proportions between them
- Skin tone and age, because the line that suits you at twenty does not suit you at fifty
Our goal is to restore your own original hairline in a way that suits your age today, so that you still look like yourself. For this stage we have developed measuring and analysis tools and brought in artificial intelligence to analyse the face and set its dimensions and proportions. The final decision always rests with the medical team after examining you.

Dense implantation in one direction
Once the number and the hairline are set, the implantation method comes next. We place grafts very close together so that no gaps appear in the future, and in one studied direction so that the hair looks natural. In density areas, we blend the new hair with your own hair so that no difference shows between them.
The technique is chosen after analysis, according to hair type, graft thickness, skin type and hair quality. Read the difference between sapphire FUE and DHI.

What is the maximum number of grafts in one session?
At OZEL we set no artificial limit on the number of grafts and we do not split the operation into two stages. We can reach 7,000 grafts in a single session when the donor area allows it, but that figure is not a target for every patient. We settle on the number that best suits your case.
How can you find the right number of grafts for you?
- Photograph your head from the front, both sides, the top and the back in good light.
- Send the photos on WhatsApp for a free first estimate with no obligation.
- Try the AI hairline studio to picture a line that suits your face in about 30 seconds.
- Confirm the plan after examination: the specialist studies your donor area, then sets the final number along with the hairline and technique.

Number of grafts for a hair transplant: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a graft and a hair?
A graft is the unit that is extracted and implanted, and it can hold one hair or several. That is why the same number of grafts can give a different number of hairs.
How many grafts do I need for the front of my head?
It depends on the position of the hairline, the size of the receded area, the density you want and the number of hairs in each graft. The specialist sets the number after examining your photos or your donor area.
Are 2,000 grafts enough?
They may be enough for limited recession at the temples or front, but usually not for wide baldness. It depends on the area and the number of hairs per graft.
Are 3,000 grafts a lot?
Not necessarily. The figure falls within the estimated table for stages 4 and 5, but the right number depends on the size of the area and what your donor area can give.
Why does OZEL prefer grafts with 3 or more hairs?
Because they give more hair from fewer grafts, so we achieve better density and protect the donor area.
Why does the punch size differ from person to person?
Because skin thickness and graft type differ between people, so we choose the size that suits each case.
What is the maximum number of grafts in one session?
At OZEL we can reach 7,000 grafts in a single session when the donor area allows it, without splitting the operation into two stages.
Does the price go up with more grafts?
No. At OZEL the price is fixed: $2,450 paid once, whatever the number of grafts, for one session with no artificial limit. Details are in the cost guide.
Is the calculation different for women?
Yes. Hair thinning in women is often distributed differently from men, so each case is studied individually and the men's baldness table does not apply.
Can the number be worked out from photos alone?
Photos give a good first estimate, but the final number is confirmed after the donor area has been studied.
